JO HUDEK In the short time I’ve lived in the village, I’ve been made to feel incredibly welcome in Fulking. I’m amazed and impressed at the vibrant life of the village, and have been really keen to get involved and support it. This has included being part of the Social Committee – helping with the preparation for the Fulking summer events, printing the excellent Pigeon Post and assisting with the application for funding of the children’s play equipment. I also joined the village Christmas choir which was a great experience and helped in getting to know people. I love walking on the Downs and across the beautiful weald. I’m a keen gardener and cook. I think Fulking is really special – for those of us lucky enough to live here and those who treasure their visits to the village. Since moving here, I’ve begun to appreciate the responsibilities as well as the joys of being part of a historic yet living village – the need to preserve the history and character of the village alongside meeting the evolving needs of villagers and visitors. I want to do my bit to help keep the village special and at the same time accessible for those who want to live and visit. I would like to offer my skills and experience such as they are, which include a lot of experience in strategic planning, funding and consultation. I’m keen to support key developments such as the Village Plan, and provide input and expertise where the Council feels it would be helpful. jo.hudek@btconnect.com TONY BROOKS Chairman Tony, a retired machinery and flight simulator design Engineer, has lived in Fulking for 36 years with his wife Doris and until 8 years ago they ran Hillbrook nursery in Clappers lane together. Retirement gives Tony the time to enjoy DIY, gardening and membership of the National Trust. He has been a Parish Councillor for four years, and is still a member of the Village Social Committee and assists at village and church events. Tony strongly believes that Fulking and its history should be safe guarded for our children to inherit and has particular interest in the preservation of the lovely local landscape. His book “The Changing Times of Fulking and Edburton 1900 to 2007” has completely sold out! hillbillybrooks@talktalk.net
PAM ROWLAND Vice Chairman Now retired, my last job was P.A. to the Managing Director of a local Housing Association where I helped set up new offices in Hove and worked there for about fifteen years. I was then involved in the setting up of Hove & Portslade Victim Support and was deputy co-ordinator for four years before we moved to Fulking. I’ve lived within the area of the South Downs since 1947, when, with my parents, we moved from London to a small farm. I was educated at a local boarding school and first came across Fulking in my early teens coming here for “Cream Teas” on days out from school. In my late teens it was the Shepherd and Dog that was the attraction, a very different pub to the one it is today !! We moved to Fulking 15 years ago. Many of you will know me because of the beautiful bluebells at Furze Field, where we garden organically, including a large veg plot and soft fruit area, and plant flowers and shrubs to encourage butterflies and birds. Others will know me because of the “Wine Quiz”. Fulking is a very special place and I feel any planning matters should be considered with the utmost care in order to preserve the intrinsic quality of the Village. Being an environmentalist two of my pet hates are light pollution and noise pollution. I am also a committed advocate of recycling. I dislike retrospective planning and cricket is a mystery to me !! One of my favourite pastimes is walking the dogs on our local Downs. That fantastic view of Fulking from the top of the hill needs our protection. bob.pamrowland@btinternet.com
JENNIFER PARMAR My husband, Baz, our 2 daughters, Madelaine and Iyana, and I live at Perching Sands Farm Cottages down the concrete track. We moved to the village just over 2 years ago and were instantly welcomed by all the neighbours. We are extremely happy here and plan to stay for many years! I must admit, my knowledge of village rules and regulations is slim but I am keen to learn and happy to help out. I have served on the Social Committee for the past year and look forward to continuing to plan great social events for the village. The past Council has left big shoes to fill but I hope I can play a part in continuing their great work. drjparmar@yahoo.co.uk
RICHARD CORNER Richard moved to Fulking in September 2001 after taking early retirement as a computer systems designer at ICI in Slough. A keen walker, and life member of the National Trust, he would drive from his home in Kingston upon Thames just to walk the Downs above Fulking. He supports local arts, crafts and theatres, and knows Mid Sussex well. In London, he was involved with traffic calming, planning and social issues. Richard has attended most Fulking Parish Council meetings. He has been responsible for Neighbourhood Watch since Oct 2004, writing notes in Pigeon Post, and attending Mid Sussex-wide meetings. He would like to preserve the unique ambience of the village, especially as part of the South Downs National Park. He investigated the proposed Shoreham Airport expansion, reporting in Pigeon Post. He also spoke in Aug 2005 at the Mid Sussex District Council hearing against the Shepherd & Dog request to open till 2am daily. Finally, as a committee member of the Clappers Lane Action Group (CLAG), he spoke at the Mid Sussex hearing (and subsequent public inquiry) against illegal property development on a green-field site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Normally Mid Sussex District Council decides upon local planning applications, and our Parish Council only makes recommendations. However, if our Council is the decision-maker, I would like to see referenda to ensure transparency of decision-making. I would also propose that our Council takes out Professional Indemnity Insurance, to protect it and the councillors from law suits by aggrieved parties. Lack of cover might inhibit councillors from protecting the best interests of Fulking residents. Email Richard Corner or phone 01273 857 219.
PAULA HAZARD Parish Clerk I moved to Fulking last summer from the other side of the South Downs. Being a keen walker and living close by in Brighton, I often visited Fulking. I always thought it was a beautiful village and enjoyed all the things that visitors notice about it – the stunning views, the pretty houses, the thirsty walkers desperately trying to get water out of the John Ruskin fountain tap! Living here now is even better than just visiting. One thing that struck me about the village is how friendly it is and how much people here put into community life. I hope that by taking on the role of Parish Clerk I will also be able to contribute to village life here. |
